Capriccio started in early May of 2003 with Lauren Kahn on
bass, Andrea Kahn on baritone, Julie Johnson on lead and Carianne Bennett on tenor. With the coaching of Carolyn Schmidt
(Andrea and Lauren's mother - certified arranger and master director of 2005 Regional Champion Hickory Tree Chorus), Capriccio
competed two months later at IES in the Rising Star Competition in Greenville, SC, and placed seventh.
The past two years, however, tenor Carianne became our new lead and
Kristen Waghorn began singing tenor. Just when
we thought we were all set for the 2004 Rising Star Competition, baritone Andrea received several job offers for playing
the keyboard in pit orchestras. At the last minute - in mid-May of 2004 - Kelly Hartford stepped in as our new baritone. Capriccio placed 5th even with these last minute changes.
For the past year, all four singers have remained! It has been a wonderful year for Capriccio. We competed with the "big girls" at Region 15's regional competition and placed eighth.
We then competed in the 2005 Rising Star competition and placed THIRD! What next?
"Capriccio" is a musical term meaning playful and whimsical, or more obviously, capricious. Our goal always has been to keep this kind of atmosphere, no matter how hard we work. Considering the fact that we are convinced we are superheros and have licking fights, I guess we can say we've achieved that goal.
